About the brewery:
Palm Brewery is located in the town of Steenhuffel, north of Brussels, and is its main attraction. It was originally an inn with a brewery called De Hoorn, whose existence is recorded as far back as 1380. In 1914 the brewery was almost completely destroyed by bombing. During reconstruction it proved impossible to invest in refrigeration technology, which was then necessary for the production of bottom-fermented Pilsner beers, and the brewery therefore continued to brew only top-fermented beers out of necessity. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his 'Spéciale Belge' the trade name 'Spéciale Palm'. He was convinced that his beer offered more aroma and flavour than the Pilsner. After World War II, the brewery continued to grow and the Palm brand became very popular. In the 1980s, it became popular with Dutch consumers and Palm became the best-selling beer in the Netherlands. As a cultural project, Palm set up a joint venture with the Boon brewery in Lembeek in 1990 and in 1998 took over the Rodenbach brewery. The majority share in Palm Belgian Craft Brewers was eventually acquired by the Dutch brewing family Swinkels in 2016.
