About the brewery:
O`Hara`s/Carlow Brewery is an independent Irish family brewery founded in 1996. It is located in Carlow in the Barrow Valley, which is a traditional Irish area where hops and barley are grown. The brewery is located in a former warehouse by the railway station and the advantage of this location is that there is very hard water here, which is suitable for brewing ales. Their first beer was the Irish Stout, which is still a bestseller. However, the brewery also has a fairly wide portfolio of other top-fermented beers, for which it has won awards at beer competitions. It also produces ciders. The brewery's portfolio is constantly growing, and in 2017, the Spanish Hijos de Rivera, which is behind, for example, Estrella Galicia beer, entered the company as an owner. Seamus O'Hara is also the founder of the Irish Craft Beer & Cider festival, which has been held annually since 2011.
What is nitro beer?
Nitro beers use a mixture of approximately 70% nitrogen and 30% carbon dioxide for carbonation. The use of nitrogen in beer causes a unique reaction. After pouring, nitrogen bubbles appear to move down into the beer, a phenomenon known as cascading. In addition, nitrogen gives the beer a unique creamy, dense foam structure, dulls some of the bitterness, and makes the malt flavors more pronounced and full-bodied. Nitrogenation is mostly used for dark beers, where the denser taste in the mouth goes well with the taste of the dark beer. The first nitrogen-sparkling beer you could buy here was Guinness. Pouring method: shake the can or bottle lightly, open it and quickly turn the entire beer upside down straight into the glass (not over the glass).
