Budějovice Budvar Brewery was founded in 1895 as a Czech joint-stock brewery, when the local Czech breweries in České Budějovice merged. The history of brewing in České Budějovice dates back to 1265, when the Czech king Otakar II. granted the city the right of batching. The brewery is best known for its original Budweiser light lager brewed from artesian water, Moravian barley and Žatec hops. The brewery is the fourth largest producer of beer in the Czech Republic and the second largest exporter of beer abroad.
