About the brewery:
Dortmunder Actien Brauerei or DAB is the last remaining large brewery in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The brewery was founded in 1868 by three entrepreneurs as "Bierbrauerei Herberz & Co" and renamed "Dortmunder Actien Brauerei" just 4 years later. At that time, coal mines were thriving in the region and many breweries were competing for the ever-growing clientele. The most prestigious beer was the Bavarian-style Dunkel, but the miners apparently preferred the local Golden Helles (later called Dortmunder Export), which had its own character due to the high sulphur content of the Dortmund water. The brewing of pilsner-type beer was almost a pioneering act in Dortmund. Dortmund is famous for its own style of beer. DAB was thus one of the few pioneers of a trend that would later dominate the entire market. Now the brewery belongs to the Radeberger Gruppe. Interestingly, DAB beer was the favourite beer of Erich Honecker, the former leader of East Germany.
